Northwestern State University

Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, is located approximately 20 miles east of Sabine Parish. Often called NSU, Northwestern is a public four-year university. It is part of the University of Louisiana System.

Louisiana Tech, a member of the University of Louisiana system, has recently moved up from the Fourth to the Third Tier in the prestigious US News & World Report listing of National Universities. The only other Louisiana public university to rate as highly is the much larger Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. McNeese State University, in Lake Charles, Louisiana. A two-hour drive south from Many.

McNeese State University offers 83 degree programs under the Colleges of Business, Education, Engineering and Technology, Liberal Arts, Nursing and Science, the Division of General and Basic Studies, and the Doré School of Graduate Studies. It is the first university in the state of Louisiana to offer a concentration in Forensic Chemistry, and was one of the first schools in the nation to offer a concentration in Terrorism, Preparedness and Security.

LSU-Shreveport Louisiana State University in Shreveport (LSUS) is a branch of the LSU System in Shreveport. Student body is around 4,000.

LSUS grants undergraduate and graduate degrees at the masters and specialist degree levels. It is the only public four year university in the Shreveport metro area. The school includes the Colleges of Business, Liberal Arts, Sciences, and Education and Human Development.

The school is a commuter school with no on-campus dorms. The university does, however, have its own housing in the form of apartments, located at the northwestern edge of the campus.

LSU-Alexandria, in Alexandria. Approximately 1.5 hour drive east/southeast of Many. Student enrollment at approximately 3,000.

LSUA became a fully-fledged university beginning in December 2002, when accreditation was given to the campus to offer their own bachelor-level degrees. Because of this, in Fall 2003, the college was organized into separate colleges in order to properly form a university structure. At the same time, LSUA began to offer bachelor's degrees in biology, general studies, liberal studies, and elementary education.

LSUA continues to develop new degree programs and will continue to expand its student enrollment and offerings into the next millennium.

Grambling State University, in Grambling, Louisiana. Approximately a two-hour drive north/northeast of Many.

Grambling is a public, co-ed university, which is among the Historically Black Colleges & Universities in the United States. Grambling is a part of the University of Louisiana System.

Grambling's instructional programs are delivered through a School of Graduate Studies and Research and four undergraduate colleges: Arts & Sciences, Business, Education, Professional Studies. The university offers 64 programs, leading to certification, associate's, bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. The university offers the only doctorate in developmental education in the nation.

Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA) in Nacogdoches, Texas. Located about 2 hours west of Many.

SFA is one of four public universities in Texas not affiliated with a university system.

Stephen F. Austin offers more than 120 areas of study, including more than 8 undergraduate majors , nearly 60 graduate degrees, and two doctoral programs. Stephen F. Austin offers classes through seven colleges, however, the university plans to merge the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Applied Arts and Sciences in 2007. SFA houses one of only two schools of forestry in the State of Texas and the only one in the timber-producing East Texas region. In addition to the main campus, the university maintains a 642-acre agricultural research center for beef, poultry and swine production and an equine center; an 18.7-acre experimental forest in southestern Nacogdoches County and a 25.3-acre forestry field station on the Sam Rayborn Reservoir.
